Tahoe City Public Utility District (TCPUD) is seeking an experienced and collaborative leader to serve as our next Director of Parks & Recreation, leading the parks, facilities, trails, and recreation programs that help support a healthy mountain community on Lake Tahoe’s North and West Shores.
About TCPUD
TCPUD provides water, wastewater collection, parks, and recreation services within a 31-square-mile service area along Lake Tahoe’s North and West Shores.
The District’s Parks & Recreation Department provides a wide range of year-round recreation opportunities for residents and visitors, including parks and athletic facilities, approximately 23 miles of paved multi-use trails, community facilities, a public boat ramp, campground, and the historic Tahoe City Golf Course and Winter Sports Park.
About the Position
The Director of Parks & Recreation provides leadership and strategic direction for the District’s Parks & Recreation Department, overseeing the full range of parks, facilities, recreation programs, and services.
The Director mentors and guides a dedicated team committed to serving the community and directly supervises the Parks Superintendent and Recreation Superintendent. The position reports to the Assistant General Manager and serves as a member of the District’s senior management team.
This dynamic role balances day-to-day operational leadership with long-term planning for the future of the District’s parks and recreation services. Responsibilities include oversight of operating and capital budgets, long- and short-range planning, feasibility studies, funding strategies, land acquisition, and the development and improvement of parks and recreation facilities.
The Director also advises District leadership and the Board of Directors and works collaboratively across the organization and with public agencies, businesses, nonprofit organizations, community members, and other regional partners.
The Ideal Candidate
TCPUD is seeking an experienced leader with a strong background in and passion for parks and recreation, knowledge of park management and recreation programming, and an understanding of local government and public processes.
The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, resourceful problem solver, strong supervisor, and excellent communicator who leads with integrity and shares TCPUD’s commitment to public service and community engagement.
Success in this role requires the ability to build strong, collaborative relationships; navigate complex operational and personnel matters; communicate effectively with staff, elected officials, partners, and the public; and develop thoughtful solutions to challenging issues.
The ideal candidate will empower staff through clear expectations and goal-setting, demonstrate sound judgment, and approach community and stakeholder engagement in an open, honest, and constructive manner.
Compensation & Benefits
The annual salary range for the Director of Parks & Recreation is $176,000–$229,000, with placement within the range based on qualifications and experience.
TCPUD also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:
- Retirement: Participation in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS)
- Deferred Compensation: CalPERS 457 Plan with a 2% contribution from TCPUD
- Medical Insurance: TCPUD currently pays the full premium for employees and qualified dependents under the CalPERS Gold PPO Plan
- Dental Insurance: TCPUD currently pays the full premium for a $1,500 annual benefit for employees and qualified dependents
- Vision Insurance: TCPUD currently pays the full premium for a $500 annual benefit for employees and qualified dependents
